With the release of the title of the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, anticipation builds all over the world for the latest installment of the Star Wars Saga, due to be released on the 12th of December 2017.
In A Peninsula Far, Far Away…
In May of last year (2016), scenes from the upcoming film were shot at an undisclosed location in Malin Head, Inishowen, Ireland’s Most Northerly Point. Many moments were captured during the time spent by cast and crew in Inishowen that have had a lasting impression on both locals, visitors and fans of the franchise.
Star Wars cast and crew while in Inishowen experienced culture, breathtaking scenery and traditional music. During filming, Inishowen was looking its best in the sunshine and brimming with excited locals and visitors trying to catch a glimpse of the set.

Spaceman At McGrorys Hotel, Inishowen
McGrorys Hotel has entertained a variety of big names in recent years from the cast and crew of Star Wars, who enjoyed traditional music performed by local band Tasty, to Astronaut and first Canadian to walk on the moon, Chris Hadfield. Exploring The Inishowen Landscape Chris is no stranger to Inishowen shores, having explored the landscape and highlighted its rugged charm and Wild Atlantic views in a video that you can see above. As you can see among his talents is singing. When you visit McGrorys Bar you will notice a sign on the wall, see below, which marks the moment he performed in the venue, it reads “An Astronaut Played Here” Capturing Inishowen From Space Initially Chris Hadfield had been captivated by the Inishowen Peninsula during his time in space prompting this infamous tweet, see below, and prompted his journey around the rugged landscape in Inishowen and the Wild Atlantic scenery surrounding the Peninsula. Meeting Mark Hamill At Farrens Bar, Inishowen
On the last day of filming scenes for the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill stopped by Farrens Bar in Malin Head, where he posed for a few photographs with owner Hugh Farren and a small crowd that had gathered.You can view the moment Hugh met Mark below, as captured by Wallace Media. Hugh describes the build up to the filming as “the greatest buzz ever” recalling how “people were camping out hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars”. Hugh, owner of Ireland’s most Northerly Bar, tells the story of meeting the iconic Mark Hamill AKA Luke Skywalker below. In the video you will have noticed the unique Stormtrooper Boot signed by none other than Mark Hamill himself, see below. This unique piece of memorabilia now sits pride of place behind Farrens Bar. The boot, alongside the Yoda Mural which is located at the side of the building, is a talking point for many who want to know the story of when Star Wars came to this rugged Peninsula.
Playing For Star Wars At McGrorys Hotel, Inishowen
John D. Ruddy, a local musician and actor, on hearing that Star Wars might be filming in Inishowen, made his way to Malin Head in the hopes of seeing some of the cast or set. What he did capture was an image of what he describes as the Millennium Falcon on the horizon in an undisclosed location in Inishowen, see above. Little did he know when he took the picture below that he would soon be playing a gig for the cast and crew of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Meeting Daisy Ridley, At McGrorys Hotel, Culdaff, Inishowen On the last day of filming scenes for Star Wars The Last Jedi in Inishowen, lead actress Daisy Ridley, alongside director Rian Johnson and other cast and crew dropped by to McGrorys Hotel for a night of entertainment. Local band Tasty were called in to play that night, one member was local actor and Star Wars fan John D. Ruddy who recalls getting the phone call and “dropping everything to travel to Culdaff”. Imperial Stormtrooper Invades Malin Head, Inishowen
Prior to the arrival of the legendary Jedi, Luke Skywalker in Inishowen, JJ Mc Gettigan a Stormtrooper (TK) with the Emerald Garrison, was on hand to guard the perimeter around Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. You can see below how visitors and locals joined in on the fun and posed with him at Farrens Bar in Malin Head, next to the now infamous Yoda Mural. The Emerald Garrison Brings The Force To Orlando
If you are a fan of Star Wars, an event not to be missed is the annual Star Wars Celebration. This iconic celebration draws legions of fans, garrisons and groups from all around the world, including Ireland’s Star Wars costuming group; The Emerald Garrison. The Emerald Garrison “Invades” Derry City Founded in 2007, the Emerald Garrison is celebrating 10 years of bringing “the force” to the Island of Ireland. Based in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the Garrison has brought a Star Wars Invasion of epic proportions to locations throughout the country. Having attended an event called “Invasion” Derry, I can see first hand why the group has amassed such a loyal following. The “Invasion” features amazing sets, accurately crafted by its members who also adorn fantastic costumes that will make you feel you are in the presence of Darth Vader himself. Member, J J Mc Gettigan, describes that the aim of the Garrison is to “enjoy what we do and help raise funds for and an awareness of all of the charities we work through”. …Inishowen Tourism treks out to the USA to promote the Peninsula creating its very own link with the ongoing Star Wars story in Malin Head. Inishowen Tourism Marketing representative Denise Henry is set to travel to the USA to spread the word of how fantastic Inishowen is as a destination to explore the Star Wars story. The Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando Florida is the venue chosen to host the official Star Wars Celebration Event which runs from 13-16 April 2017. It is estimated that over 50,000 Star Wars fans will be in attendance and will be treated to a four day epic adventure which resonates with the Star Wars Celebration. The ultimate experience will bring fans of all ages together, from all around the world. From Inishowen To Orlando: A Star Wars Celebration
Navigating among a swarm of Lightsabers, terrifying Sith lords and masterful Jedi, I arrived at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida, chosen venue of the eagerly anticipated Star Wars Celebration 2017. Where, as you can see below, queues of eager fans stretched all the way from the exterior to the interior halls of the building. Many camped over night to guarantee first access to what promised to be a Celebration packed with intergalactic surprises, merchandise and experiences. Promoting Inishowen, Donegal At Star Wars Celebration Orlando Entering the large exhibit hall, our Ahch-To inspired booth was located in the heart of a creative and bustling space that housed all manner of experiences and merchandise for Star Wars fans. Our eye catching booth caught the attention of many Star Wars enthusiasts, who posed by our Skellig Michael inspired stairs. The 7th installment of the Star Wars Saga, The Force Awakens was filmed on location at Skellig Michael, a UNESCO world heritage site, and along the dramatic coastline of the Dingle Peninsula. May The Fourth Be With You At Malin Head, Inishowen
Sunny Malin Head was living up to its name during May The Fourth, as Inishowen Tourism staff made their way along the Ahch-To Way to celebrate the Star Wars connection to Inishowen. Discovering The Ahch-To Way In Inishowen The Ahch-To way is a driving route, inspired by our planet name in the Star Wars Universe. This awesome journey, located along the Inishowen 100 scenic drive and Wild Atlantic Way coastal route, is packed with awesome viewing points, photo-ops and inspiring Star Wars stories. To our surprise, at a viewing point overlooking Ineuran Bay, we would encounter, two mean looking members of the Emerald Garrison patrolling the coastline. Thanks so much to Gareth M Scott and David Brown for alerting us to patrolling TIE (Twin Ion Engine) Pilots in Malin Head. Cautiously approaching the two guards we found out that they were a TIE Pilot and TIE Pilot: Reserve stationed in Inishowen to search for what they describe as “Rebel Scum”. Wanting to explore the region further we joined them on their patrol at other locations in Malin Head including; a rugged shoreline in front of the Curiosity Shop, that overlooks Esky Bay. The Inishowen Tourism team took advantage of the sunshine and beautiful Peninsula location at Malin Head to promote themselves as a destination not to miss for all Star Wars fans on May 4th, the official Star Wars celebration day for fans worldwide. The culmination of the fantastic weather and the official celebration day offset the idea to get out the office and show the prospective visitor here what is on offer during their stay and what better time to do this amid the wave of enthusiasm that has followed Inishowen Tourism’s representative Denise Henry’s successful marketing trip to the official Star Wars celebration in Orlando USA. Inishowen Tourism have forged strong links with other providers of the Star Wars experience here in Ireland since the Orlando event and one of the local groups assisted with our photo shoot. Members of the Emerald Garrison (Irelands Star Wars costuming group) kindly offered to attend in full costume as a TIE Pilot and Reserve TIE Pilot on May 4th.
