A fascinating new exhibition “A Vanished World – the landed gentry of Donegal” opens in Donegal County Museum Friday 15th September at 7.30pm. Curated by Donegal County Council’s County Museum and Archives Services, it explores the world of the landed gentry in Donegal in the decades before the foundation of the State. From the social whirl of dinner parties and dances to the management of lands and gardens, the exhibition uncovers the stories of those who lived and worked in the vanished world of Donegal’s big houses. Through archives, images and artefacts from the collections of the Archives and Museum Services as well as items on loan, the exhibition reveals what life was like on these country estates. For children there is a special dressing-up area where they can try on replica housemaid and butler costumes. In association with the exhibition and as part of the forthcoming Culture Night Programme on the 22nd September, the Museum will welcome the Countess of Leitrim who is seeking staff for her country estate.
