The Buncrana Library were delighted to welcome the temporary exhibition of artefacts and personal belongings of Heritage Pioneer; Mabel R. Colhoun. The collection is located within the Library offering both locals and visitors an opportunity to view a wonderful collection of objects.

The exhibition launch included a talk by Education Officer Ronan McConnell from the Tower Museum and John McCarron from the West Inishowen History and Heritage Society who offered a fascinating overview about the ongoing work to catalogue the Mabel Colhoun Archive.
Local Archaeologist Denise Henry also provided an insight into the life and work of Mabel Colhoun, in the context of Mabel’s contribution to our understanding of Heritage in Inishowen and the North West.

Carefully guarded by a glass case, you will find a selection of objects which include; flint tools dating back to 4000 B.C. A collection that highlight Mabel’s interest and active involvement with archaeology. A lady that has been described by former colleagues, friends and family as;

We gain a sense of Mabel’s talents as an artist through a collection of watercolours on display which include; a beautiful depiction of Castle Bridge in Swan Park, Buncrana.
A Glimpse Of The Past At Buncrana Library, Inishowen, Donegal
Mabel Colhoun spent over forty years of her life in a voluntary capacity to surveying the Heritage of Inishowen. On display you will find Mabel’s field note book which details information about sites surveyed in the Peninsula.
Celebrating Heritage Pioneer; Mabel R. Colhoun
The exhibition will run for a month in the Buncrana Library, Wednesday 6th September to the 4th of October. The collection on display is part of a larger exhibition held in the Tower Museum called Mabel Colhoun; A North West Pioneer. As part of the exhibition program there will be a number of talks and workshops to highlight the life and work of Mabel that include; object handling sessions and a sketching workshop at the Tower Museum.
