Heritage Week has kicked off in Inishowen, Donegal with a wealth of events and festivities to celebrate the rich culture of the region. This years theme “Its in your nature” aims to highlight the connection between people, place, and our natural heritage.
According to the Heritage Council and Donegal County Council a record;
124 Heritage Week events are planned across the county and Donegal is set to have the highest number of Heritage Week events per head of population in Ireland this year
Heritage organisations, community groups, museums, heritage centres and cultural services across the country will host and provide a wealth of experiences for all the family.
Heritage Week In Inishowen, Donegal
At a number of venues in Inishowen you have the opportunity to experience; exhibitions, nature walks, guided tours, talks and music in celebration of our shared heritage. Some of the events include; a celebration of Author and Historian Amy Young hosted by the Lands Of Eogain Heritage Group on 25th August at St Buadans Church, Culdaff.
Following new archaeological discoveries at the Greencastle Golf Club, an exhibition entitled “Stone Age Tools” will be held at the venue. Members of the public can view the fascinating collection of artefacts discovered along the coast and on the grounds ~ 21st & 22nd August 10am to 5pm
Getting Closer To Nature During Heritage Week, Inishowen, Donegal
Heritage and community groups in Donegal during Heritage Week will draw attention to the importance of wildlife and nature. The Malin Head Heritage Group will host a “Wild Flower Walk” on 22nd August 5.00pm to 6.30 and St. Columbas Straid Conservation Group will host a wildlife walk in the scenic area of Binion, see below in Clonmany Inishowen ~ August 23rd 2.30pm to 5.00pm.
The West Inishowen History and Heritage Society (WIHHS) will host a number of events during Heritage Week that include; An archaeological field trip led by archaeologist John J. Hegarty on August 27th to explore historic and archaeological sites and Wildlife Ranger Emmett Johnson will host a talk and walk from Strahact Farm, Inch Island ~ 24th August 6.30 to 9pm.
